Clean up my Credit Report
After you have gotten your free credit report, it is time to starting cleaning up your credit. After you receive your credit report, check it closely for any errors. Keep in mind:
- A divorce does not release you from legal responsibility on any account that has your name on it
- Even if you pay off a debt it does not mean your payment history will be removed(such as bankruptcies)
- The balance on the file may not be current. It may be several months behind. Just be sure it is correct for the date it is reported
Be sure all credit card account numbers match your cards. If you find any errors on your credit report, write a dispute letter to the credit bureau. The credit bureau must correct any errors within 30 days after receiving your letter. Send any letters via certified mail, with a return receipt requested. This ensures that you have proof of your request. Follow up with the credit bureau after 30 days by calling them. If they can't prove the information on your report they must remove it. If the credit bureau doesn't cooperate, contact the Federal Trade Commission.
If you follow these simple steps you will be well on your way to cleaning up your credit report.
